I did these right after our trip to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland

Watercolor on paper, painted from life

Some places stay with you. Petty Harbour is one of them — a tiny fishing village on the edge of Newfoundland where the houses climb the hillside in every color imaginable and the boats sit quiet in the harbor like they've always been there. This painting captures that scene the way it felt standing there: vivid, lived-in, unhurried.

Our tour guide made it a point of visiting the Bay of Fundy during low tide, so that we could experience what happens as the ocean recedes. It was very interesting to see just how far low tide goes.

I was staying just below Signal Hill in St John's when i took a photo of the far side of the harbour opening. I was playing with my wild side when I painted this one. It's interesting how it turned out.
